Description
Taxodium distichum var. imbricarium ‘Greenfeather’ Pond Cypress is a distinctive deciduous conifer known for its fine-textured, feathery foliage that emerges bright green and turns a rich coppery-orange in fall before shedding for winter. This variety is a naturally dwarf form of the native bald cypress (Taxodium distichum), prized for its compact, graceful growth habit and tolerance to wet soils, making it an excellent choice for rain gardens, pondsides, or moist landscapes. Originating from the southeastern United States, the pond cypress is closely related to the bald cypress but typically grows in more acidic, swampy conditions and features rounded, imbricated branchlets that give it a unique lacy appearance. ‘Greenfeather’ has gained recognition from landscape professionals for its year-round ornamental interest and adaptability, thriving in USDA zones 5 through 9 and offering robust resistance to pests and diseases common to wetland species. This cultivar’s combination of textured foliage, seasonal color change, and wet-site adaptability makes it a standout choice for adding vertical structure and natural elegance to water-featured gardens and native plant landscapes.
