Description
Ulmus x ‘Patriot’ Elm is a hybrid elm tree known for its exceptional disease resistance, particularly to Dutch elm disease, which historically devastated elm populations across North America. Developed through a USDA breeding program, ‘Patriot’ is a cross between the American elm (Ulmus americana) and the Siberian elm (Ulmus pumila), combining the American elm’s classic vase-shaped form and attractive, glossy green foliage with the Siberian elm’s hardiness and adaptability. This medium to large deciduous tree grows rapidly and features a dense canopy that provides excellent shade, making it a favored choice for urban landscapes and street plantings. ‘Patriot’ Elm’s bright green leaves turn a rich yellow in the fall, adding seasonal interest. It thrives in full sun and adapts well to various soil types, showcasing remarkable tolerance to heat, drought, and pollution, which contributes to its popularity in challenging urban environments. Recognized for its superior landscape performance, ‘Patriot’ Elm has earned accolades for its combination of beauty, resilience, and ecological value.
