Description
Carex nigra, commonly known as Black Sedge, is a versatile and hardy perennial sedge native to wetlands and moist habitats across Europe, Asia, and North America. Characterized by its fine-textured, dark green to almost black foliage that forms dense, tufted clumps, this grass-like plant adds striking contrast and architectural interest in garden landscapes, particularly in naturalistic or water garden settings. Often reaching heights of 12 to 24 inches, Black Sedge thrives in moist to wet soils and tolerates partial shade to full sun, making it an excellent choice for rain gardens, pond edges, and shaded borders. Its small, inconspicuous brownish flower spikes appear in late spring to early summer, adding subtle seasonal texture without overpowering other plantings. Valued for its low maintenance and adaptability, Carex nigra contributes to erosion control and provides habitat for wildlife, including beneficial insects. It has gained recognition in sustainable landscaping for its ability to improve soil and water quality, while its elegant dark foliage has made it a favored selection in contemporary garden designs.
