Description
Helleborus x North Star ‘Garnet Frills’, commonly known as the Lenten Rose, is a striking hybrid perennial celebrated for its exquisite deep garnet-red flowers adorned with delicate frilled edges, which bloom in late winter to early spring. This cultivar stands out due to its rich, vibrant coloration and ruffled petal margins, offering a unique twist on the classic Lenten Rose’s typically softer hues. Originating from crosses between Helleborus orientalis and other closely related species, the North Star series was developed to enhance flower size, color intensity, and flowering period, making ‘Garnet Frills’ a favored choice for shade gardens and woodland borders. Its evergreen, leathery foliage provides year-round interest, and it thrives in well-drained soil with partial to full shade, demonstrating excellent deer resistance and low maintenance. The cultivar is also recognized for its strong disease resistance compared to some older hellebore varieties. ‘Garnet Frills’ has been appreciated by gardeners and horticulturalists alike for its ornamental value and adaptability, contributing to the ever-growing popularity of hellebores in temperate garden landscapes.
