Description
Bergenia ‘Fairytale Romance’ Pigsqueak is a robust and ornamental perennial known for its bold, rounded evergreen foliage and charming clusters of bell-shaped, pink flowers that bloom in early spring. This variety, a member of the Saxifragaceae family, is prized for its adaptability to a range of soil conditions and its tolerance to shade, making it an excellent groundcover or border plant in temperate gardens. The thick, leathery leaves often develop a striking reddish-purple hue in colder months, adding year-round interest. Originating from the genus Bergenia, which has been cultivated since the 18th century for both medicinal and decorative purposes, ‘Fairytale Romance’ exemplifies modern breeding efforts to enhance flower color and plant vigor while retaining the classic “pigsqueak” characteristic—the distinctive sound made when leaves are rubbed together. This cultivar has been recognized within horticultural circles for its ornamental appeal and resilience, making it a favored choice among landscapers and gardeners seeking low-maintenance yet visually impactful perennials.
